Nashville Flood 2010

6 05 2010

I never would have thought that Nashville would have ever flooded as bad as it did last weekend. Even when it was raining for the 3 straight days, I didn’t think that it would cause such a disaster as it did. I even woke up Monday morning, did my usual routine and stop by Kroger to pick up milk and muffins for what I thought would be a slow day at soundcheck. Only to find you couldn’t even get within a mile of soundcheck, because that building was now a part of the overflowed Cumberland river.

As I continued my day, some friends of mine a few miles away had been trapped on their block by a flooded river that now consumed Beth Drive. As nervous as the homeowner was about the water actually getting into the house, everyone seemed to be just waiting for the water to recede, by fishing off the porch and keeping high hopes. The laid back attitude came to a halt when the water kept rising and talks of a the dam opening up raising their flood waters another 3 feet. So the 5 of us used our kiddie rafts we had bought at K-mart to help get bags, and important belongings over across the street to higher ground. The house ended up being ok as the water receded that night and the homes on Beth Drive were for the most part saved.

My house being ok through the flood of 2010, my coffee company which is set up and stored in soundcheck nashville has not even been able to reach until this afternoon. I don’t even want to think about how much was lost within the 7 ft of water inside the building. Keith Urban was even talking about soundcheck on CNN. Millions of dollars between tour supply, fender, peavey, stage call, and the whole rental dept at soundcheck is probably ruined. Not to mention the toll its going to take on the spring / summer touring season as 100 or so huge country / rock bands keep all their gear here. Ill keep ya updated as to the damage of Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee on tour and the status of soundcheck! read their blog here! www.soundchecknashville.com

One thing that remains important, is the community here in Nashville. Everyone has had such a willing heart to volunteer, help clean up, provide assistance, and fundraising thru music or to Hands on Nashville. I drove by the middle school down the street on my way home yesterday, figured Id stop and help out. There was a lot of confusion as to the volunteers coming to relieve each other, and everyone ended up leaving after their shift ended and left me and the police there to hand out cases of water in an effort to conserve the limited water resources here. As the school was on my corner, I went to my neighbors and my house to get my roommates and we all ended up handing out these cases of water to anyone who would drive up. I was there from 2 – 8, sunburnt, and exhausted. But totally worth it. I’m so proud to live in this city, and see the community come together during this disaster. Got my pic in the Tennessean also to my surprise!

Nashville has been representing this week on the live music scene!

Monday March 15 2010 – newly named – Bridgestone Arena
Muse – Silversun Pickups

This show is in my top 2 favorite production of all time. Rivals Coldplays VIVA tour. Muse are 3 guys with incredible musicianship and left me feeling like they were more a metal band than anything else. Their riffs are so damn good, accompanied by some killer melodies and very dramatic arrangements. Silversun Pickups opened, Im a fan of their records, although they got the opening band slot (lower volume, no lights) they made the best of it and gave the crowd a great set. Sounding very similar to pumpkins! Pretty sure the singer was still hungover from the night before hangin at the red door. It was a great show, minus the $9 beers we drank. Thanks to my bro n law and sister, as the tix were my christmas present!

Tuesday March 16, 2010 – Third Man Records. Nashville. TN

I got an email towards the end of last week to RSVP to a special screening of The new White Stripes DVD of their Canadian tour “Under the Great White Northern Lights”. As a huge fan of the band and Jack White, I had to get involved. So I did as the directions said in the email. Went to Jacks Label Third Man down off of 6th avenue, waited in line for about 40 minutes to purchase a copy of the dvd and secure my spot for the screening later that night. I got 2 passes and took Andy as an early bday present! Jack hosted the event in the back of Third Man records, 75 seats only, there was popcorn and drinks, and a small introduction from the staff at third man. The movie was great, unfortunately Jack was on vacation in New Zealand!

Wednesday March 17, 2010 Exit In

I couldn”t decide what I wanted to do on this st pattys day. I was considering joining my sister at basement for Karen Elsens (Jack Whites wife) first show. However, I found out David Bazan was playing at the exit in with Headlights. So I had dinner with Sarah, Mira, Josh, Joe, and Kadar at Eastland cafe and then met up with Matt Hoopes to head down to the exit in. I have seen Pedro the lion about a dozen times, mostly at the fireside bowl (rip) in chicago growing up. I miss that place…. Daves voice was kinda shot, but still sounded really cool. He ended up playing a bunch of pedro songs that really brought me back. His stage banter in between songs is always the best as he always asks the crowd questions to ask him. Most of the time he is an asshole and pisses everyone off, this time around he seemed to be real honest, and told everyone he missed his family and kids, but loves be playing the show right now. Still love his music and glad hes still creating music!
